Dr Shah was appointed Consultant Haematologist at the Whittington Hospital NHS and University College London Hospitals, London, UK, in 2004. She became Fellow of The Royal College of Pathologists in 2008. She is the current Chair of the National haemoglobiopathy Registry which records information on patients with haemoglobinopathies and rare anaemias inorder to improve clinical care in the UK. In this capacity Dr Shah is also a member of the Clinical Reference Group for haemoglobinopathies and the steering committee and expert panel for the National haemoglobinopathy Panel. She is also the Chair of the UK Forum on haemoglobin Disorders. As a result of this Dr Shah is extensielby involved in improving clinical care and access to expert care of patients in the UK.

Dr Shah is actively involved in clinical research trials in thlaassaemia and sickle cell disease.
